Hybrid Bus Joins Vail's Fleet
10/25/2005
Demonstrating its commitment to clean air, the town will add a hybrid bus to its transit fleet in 2006, seven more in 2008 and two in 2011, resulting in the conversion of 30 percent of its bus fleet to hybrid. The buses cost about $200,000 more than a standard low floor diesel but can deliver up to 60 percent greater fuel economy and can reduce emissions by as much as 90 percent, according to industry estimates. The town will save over 19,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year when all 10 hybrid buses are in operation.
Additionally, hybrid buses are considerably quieter and the town plans to use its first hybrid bus on its in-town route to help reduce noise pollution. The town purchased its first hybrid vehicle in 2002, a Toyota Prius. It now has two Toyota Prius vehicles and will also purchase a hybrid SUV in 2006, adding to the town's goal of reducing the overall emissions and fuel consumption of town vehicles.
